"Art OHARA International Exhibition" – A Global Artistic Exchange in Kyoto
The "Art OHARA International Exhibition" is an international art exchange connecting Ohara, a scenic area in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, with artists from around the world. This unique exhibition was conceived and organized by artist Nobuko Ueda, a resident of Ohara.
The inaugural exhibition, held in April 2024, showcased the works of 13 artists, including those who had evacuated from Ukraine to Kyoto and artists based in the city. Building on this success, the next edition is set to take place in June 2025. The exhibition is now inviting both domestic and international artists, with a particular focus on foreign artists residing in Kyoto.
The event will be hosted at the Ohara Cultural Center (formerly JA Kyoto Chuo Ohara Branch) and the AIR Ohara Gallery (formerly Sanzenin-do), both renowned for their traditional Japanese architectural charm, providing a unique backdrop for artistic expression.
「アートOHARA国際展」は、京都市左京区にある大原と海外アーティストとの国際交流展です。大原在住のアーティスト、ノブコ・ウエダにより企画されました。2024年4月に開催された第一回はウクライナから京都へ避難してきたアーティストを含め京都在住のアーティストと合わせて13名による展覧会。2025年は26名のアーティストが参加し、6月に開催予定です。京都在住の外国人アーティストを中心に国内外のアーティストに参加を呼びかけています。会場は、京都大原の大原文化センター（JA京都中央旧大原支店）、AIR大原Gallery（旧三千院道）の和風建築で開催いたします。
Art OHARA International Exhibition – Concept
The Art OHARA International Exhibition does not impose a fixed theme or single concept each year. This approach reflects the diversity of global events and the varied perspectives of artists.
Our goal is to create an exchange exhibition in Ohara that embraces these unique expressions—what we call "eachness." Every participating artist brings their own ideas and techniques, shaping their works into individual statements. These pieces are then interpreted by viewers, fellow artists, and critics, fostering a dynamic dialogue.
Even without a predetermined theme, a collective narrative naturally emerges—formed by the perspectives of those who curate the exhibition and the era reflected in the artists' works. If the audience can perceive this evolving outline, then the Art OHARA International Exhibition has achieved its mission: to facilitate artistic exchange through open interpretation and interaction.
「アートOHARA国際展」は、開催年度ごとのテーマや一言でのコンセプトを提示しません。それは世界各地で起こっている事象の幅広さと、アーティストたちが大切にしていることのバラバラさからです。その「それぞれさ」を持ち寄った交流展を大原で開催したいと考えています。それぞれのアーティストがそれぞれで持っている考えや技法を作品として持ち寄り、観客や他のアーティスト、批評家たちが読み解いていく。
一方でテーマやコンセプトを提示しなくとも、いやがおうでもアーティストを選定している人間の思想やアーティストが表現する時代性は、展覧会が組み上がってくるにつれ輪郭を表してきます。その輪郭を観客が読み取ることができればアートOHARA国際展が成そうとしている交流展は成功したと言えるでしょう。
